Does Glass Block UV Light, or Can You Get a Sunburn
You may have heard that you cant get a sunburn through glass, but that doesnt mean glass blocks all ultraviolet, or UV, light. The rays that lead to skin or eye damage still can get through, even if you dont get burned. Types of Ultraviolet Light The terms ultraviolet lightà andà UV refer to a relatively large wavelength range between 400 nanometers (nm) and 100 nm. It falls between violet visible light and x-rays on the electromagnetic spectrum. UV is described as UVA, UVB, UVC, near ultraviolet, middle ultraviolet, and far ultraviolet, depending on its wavelength. UVC is completely absorbed by Earths atmosphere, so it doesnt pose a risk to your health. UV light from the sun and man-made sources are mainly in the UVA and UVB range. How Much UV Is Filtered by Glass? Glass that is transparent to visible light absorbs nearly all UVB. This is the wavelength range that can cause a sunburn, so its true you cant get a sunburn through glass. However, UVA is much closer to the visible spectrum than UVB. About 75% of UVA passes through ordinary glass. UVA leads to skin damage and genetic mutations that can lead to cancer. Glass does not protect you from skin damage from the sun. It affects indoor plants too. Have you ever taken an indoor plant outside and burned its leaves? This happens because the plant was unaccustomed to the higher levels of UVA found outside, compared with inside a sunny window. Do Coatings and Tints Protect Against UVA? Sometimes glass is treated to protect against UVA. For example, most sunglasses made from glass are coated so they block both UVA and UVB. The laminated glass of automobile windshields offers some (not total) protection against UVA. Automotive glass used for side and rear windows ordinarily does not protect against UVA exposure. Similarly, the window glass used in homes and offices does not filter much UVA. Tinting glass reduces the amount of both visible and UVA transmitted through it. Some UVA still gets through, though. On average, 60ââ¬â70% of UVA still penetrates tinted glass. Ultraviolet Light From Fluorescent Lighting Fluorescent lights do emit UV light but usually not enough to cause a problem. In a fluorescent bulb, electricity excites a gas, which emits UV light. The inside of the bulb is coated with a fluorescent coating of phosphor that converts the ultraviolet light into visible light. Most of the UV produced by the process is either absorbed by the coating or else doesnt make it through the glass. Some UV does get through, but the UK Health Protection Agency has estimated that UV exposure from fluorescent bulbs is responsible for only about 3% of a persons exposure to ultraviolet light. Your actual exposure depends on how close you sit to the light, the type of product that is used, and how long you are exposed. You can reduce exposure by increasing your distance from the fluorescent fixture or wearing sunscreen. Halogen Lights and UV Exposure Halogen lights release some ultraviolet light and usually are constructed of quartz because ordinary glass cannot withstand the heat produced when the gas reaches its incandescent temperature. Pure quartz does not filter UV, so there is a risk of UV exposure from halogen bulbs. Sometimes the lights are made using special high-temperature glass (which at least filters UVB) or doped quartz (to block UV). Sometimes halogen bulbs are encased inside glass. UV exposure from a pure quartz lamp can be reduced by using a diffuser (a lampshade) to spread out the light or increasing your distance from the bulb. Ultraviolet Light and Black Lights Black lights present a special situation. A black light is intended to transmit ultraviolet light rather than block it. Most of this light is UVA. Certain ultraviolet lamps transmit even more of the UV part of the spectrum. You can minimize the risk of damage from these lights by keeping your distance from the bulbs, limiting your exposure time, and avoiding looking at the lights. Most black lights sold for Halloween and parties are mostly safe. The Bottom Line All glass is not created equal, so the amount of ultraviolet light penetrating the material depends on the type of glass. But ultimately, glass offers no real protection against sun damage to the skin or eyes.

The Health Problem Of Interest - 1169 Words
Problem: Describe the health problem of interest. (2 paragraphs) The health problem of interest is sickle cell disease. Sickle Cell Disease is also called Sickle Cell Anemia. Sickle Cell disease is an inherited blood disorder which means it s not contagious. Anybody that has sickle cell disease, must have two defective hemoglobin genes from each parent. If a person has only one hemoglobin gene that is sickled and the other hemoglobin gene is normal the person will have the sickle cell trait. Hemoglobin is a molecule in the red blood cell that helps carry oxygen. There is an error in the hemoglobin that causes the cell to be sickled. This disease deforms the red blood cells shape from a disc like shape meaning the red blood cells are healthy to a crescent moon shape meaning that s unhealthy. The one thing in common that people either have the disease or trait is they are immune from catching malaria. In this disease the unhealthy sickled cells blockade the small arteries and veins which causes oxygen depletion to all the tissues and critical organs in the human body. The damaged tissues surrounding the veins and arteries causes infection, Congestive Heart Failure, Kidney Failure , Stroke, chronic anemia, Blood Clots and, Painful Episodes. This disease causes the increase of risk in a lot of health problems such as acute chest syndrome, leg ulcers, muscle pain, intracranial hemorrhages and, pulmonary hypertension. How can ICT Help Special Needs Children Integrate Themselves in Society Free Essays
How can ICT Help Special Needs Children Integrate Themselves in Society? ââ¬Å"We are seen as ââ¬Ëabnormalââ¬â¢ because we are different, we are problem people, lacking the equipment for social integration.â⬠(Brisenden, 1986) Not so long ago, society was to blame for secluding and cutting off special needs people, from complete partaking in society and as a result, these impaired people ended up demoralized and feeling inferior to others. Today we know that special needs people, try their best to learn to communicate with the rest of society. We will write a custom essay sample on How can ICT Help Special Needs Children Integrate Themselves in Society? or any similar topic only for you Order Now The problem is not whether they succeed or not, the problem is; Are we, as part of society, doing enough effort to help them in their lifetime struggle? The International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) has recently initiated learning environments which integrates Computer Technology and Good teaching in order to increase the motivation and self-esteem of special needs students. Researchers following closely the program have stated that Computer technology enhances these childrenââ¬â¢s ability to solve problems and make decisions, they build a positive self-image, they are excited about learning and thus they become better citizens. One major reason for using ICT was to reduce the large rate of dropouts. Researchers have concluded that Children with Literacy Problems (mostly dyslexics), often lack behind the rest of their class, give up on learning and end-up as school dropouts, feeling unable to fit in a society. ISTE has created a learning program called Video Disk Spaced System. This proved to be highly successful as it was not only a support for these children, in order to keep up with the rest of the class but it also managed to promote that positive self-image concept. Computer technology motivated these kids and they in turn appreciated the potential of ICT in a learning environment. Results have shown that ICT did help these special needs children as the dropout rate decreased to three times lower than the natural average. ICT can also help physically impaired children by fulfilling their dreams. In example Sharita a physically disabled child dreams to become a writer but unfortunately she cannot move her fingers. Computer technology has helped her fulfil her dream by devising a long extended stick in the form or a finger with which she can press the letters on a computer keyboard. Another concrete example regarded Megan who is unable to speak and write because she has Cerebral Palsy, however through ICT she was awarded as the Top English Student in her class. A Light Talker was devised, which is basically a matrix of letters and phrases. Through the use of a head switch (because Megan can only control the movement of her head), she can stop vertical movements of light at the desired row and stop the horizontal movement of light at the desired letter or phrase. Through ICT Megan is thus able to communicate with tremendous effort. However one has to keep in mind that without this device Megan can neither develop her intellectual potential, nor can she express herself as a part of society. Through the examples discussed above one can realise that by Integrating Computer Technology with learning, these special needs children are becoming more eager to learn, they are being provided with new ways to manipulate their environment in order to communicate better with the rest of society, barriers are being blown away and a variety of new worlds opened up, all by the use of Computer Technology. Apart from all this, ICT has provided them with what any individual wants that is their independence. Illegal Copying of Intellectual Property Alert!! You may be Unaware of Committing Computer Crimesâ⬠¦ * What is Illegal Copying? A widely used term which means the same as illegal copying is Copyright Theft or Copyright Infringement. Copyright theft occurs when making use of protected work such as: software programs; another writerââ¬â¢s text; movies; sounds; and images, without actually paying the required fee for authorisation. * Illegal Copying and the Use of Computers: The use of Computers has made the act of copying far easier and handier than in the past. Burton (1996) argued that the Internet is one big copying machine that is basically ridiculing copyright laws. * What is considered as Copyright Violation? Software Piracy ââ¬â Software copying such as copying a program from one diskette to another. Network Piracy ââ¬â Distributing unauthorised copyright materials in digitized form ex: record companies have protested against sending unauthorized copies of digital recordings over the internet. Plagiarism ââ¬â Illegal Copying of Academic Property: such as another writerââ¬â¢s text, journals etc. Interpreting and presenting them as oneââ¬â¢s own. Ownership of media ââ¬â Altering images, movies and sounds. * Plagiarism: Illegal Copying of Academic Property: You as a student may think it is harmless making one copy of an Academic Software program while the teacher is looking away, but you need to keep in mind that if all students should think the same as you think, then one single act of software piracy, will be then multiplied thousands of times. In addition to this if you are caught copying illegally Scholar property, you may end up sued by the school itself. Interpreting other writersââ¬â¢ texts (found while researching for assignments) and presenting them as your own is also considered as a criminal offence and one can end up permanently suspended from school. * The Results of Getting Caught : If you are caught using pirated academic software, you could: Face civil fines (which you donââ¬â¢t afford and your parents may want to kill you) Endure humiliating publicity End up with a criminal record (which affects you future) * A Word of Advice: It is not ethical to illegally copy any intellectual property nor is it worth risk taking because there is a high percentage of getting a computer virus and worse the risk of getting caught! Behaviour and Information Technology Method
Question: Discuss about the Behaviour and Information Technology Method. Answer: Introduction Human-computer interface is a discipline that deals with human interaction with computers and the level of utility as a result of these interactions. One of the major ways human interacts with computers in current times is the internet and more precisely, websites form which they can access tons of information across all the aspects of life. Its therefore of grave importance that we study how the design and presentation of a given website facilitate the human-computer interaction, which is the sole purpose of this report. It is, therefore, the aim of this report to expound on what property or aspect of a website improves or hinders effective interaction hence lowering the utility of that website. This report will examine the components of a chosen site and with the information obtained, model an efficient website to serve both its owner and the visitors. This report will also evaluate the reaction of different people to various components of a website. The website given is a media website that specializes in news, ranging from sports, economy, politics and lifestyle. The images are placed above the texts, and the various elements are well positioned so that the website appears orderly (Polson, 2013). It has a scroll down structure and a search panel at the bottom below which contact shortcut for the company, online security link, terms of use and copyright information are included. At the top right and bottom center rests a beautiful company logo. Graphic images have been used a better part of the website to pass the message on the link below it (Tsai, 2014). Here is an example of an image used; There is also varying color use all throughout the site. The font in use is Helvetica size 11 which is visible to the medium type of vision and also not so complicated for quick reading because site visitors only take very short time in a given website and hence visible and easily readable font helps a great deal. There is also varying color use on the background to help in enhancement with most of the parts having black or gray text on white background (Lowry, 2014). In some parts the text has been animated, the flashing movement draws the attention of the visitor which increases the possibility of that text being read. The blue color is predominantly used trough out the page unifying the content of the company (Kaneshiro, 2015). The website also contains Ads as well as a promotion pop up for her customers. The content of the site is well managed and not monotonous since after visiting the site for the second time, the information as well as the images, has changed hence capturing the visitor's attention time and again (Mayshak, 2017). The news has been updated, and even newer images included hence prompting the visitor to follow the links and hence the information gets spread. The search panel at the top is a very important tool since it helps a reader who does not wish to go through the whole text looking for the specific thing so they just type the keyword and acquire it faster (Yang, 2016). This site has two search panels both at the top and the bottom hence catering even for that visitor who just remembered to such for something after scrolling all the way down. The site is also accessed within a considerably short period and hence no frustrations experienced by visitors due to slow loading sites which cause loss of visitors (Chen, 2016). There are also social media icons that pop up once a visitor clicks on a link making it easier for them to share content on the site to other platforms and once others click on the link, they visit the website too. It also includes a current weather conditions update section which would make a visitor want to visit the site again just to get an update and while in the process, they read other information in the site. Covering the whole extent of news coverage helps to cater for a bigger number of people and hence securing a bigger number of visitors (Mclaughlin, 2016). The inclusion of daily horoscope section would compel that section of visitors who love them to visit the site on a daily basis and in the process they get the daily updates which result in growth in the website's popularity (Abu-Doush, 2013). The appearance of the horoscopes is also animated helping to catch the attention of the readers. The website also includes a complaint and feedback section under my contact section right at the bottom of the site. This provides a platform for visitors to air their concerns so that the site owner can correct that. It is also a good platform where the website owner can interact with the sites visitors eventually equipping him/her with skills to improve the site (Kingsolver, 2014). There is also a section which provides to support articles where visitors can access any extra help they require on a given topic or issue. This helps to raise the level of satisfaction visitors get by increasing the range of sources (Lfstrm, 2015). Conversely, the website lacks chartroom provision where visitors can engage online on a given topic that has appeared on that website (Pallud, 2014). This is a very important tool that makes the readers feel they really own the site therefore they are likely to visit it even more often than not. This also provides the website owner with an easy way to assess the level of impact posts in the site are having on the visitors, that is, how interested they are to reading and assimilating the content in the site (Siibak, 2015). The site also lacks a touch of color scheme. This is where different colors are placed adjacent to each other in a key sentence contained in a website so that each word is contained in its own color background or some other color pattern. This draws the attention of color lovers really quick making sure they do not miss out on important points (Dania, 2016). To obtain more inclusive and conclusive results, i invited two colleagues in the university to review the site and comment, their names, Janet and Michael. Michael is a gentleman, 23 years and in his final year doing a bachelor's degree in economics whereas Janet is a lady 30 years old and currently working as an accounting consultant. Janet said the colors did not appear so appealing since blue appeared to be widely used, a color she termed as old. It was her view too that a little graffiti would aid in capturing attention of the youth audience. She said that fancy things make people of even her age feel that all their needs have been catered for and that, that piece is really meant for them. Also, she added that a comments box would help a new user capture the whole idea of the site faster. Michael said that the colors were okay for him, but the company logo does not have an element of news' or media.' He said that an image of some media device or recording tool should be crafted into the logo so that it can pass a message about the company by itself. The views of Janet differ slightly from mine when it comes to the addition of graffiti and fancy staff to the site, the reason being such an act would result in deviation from the whole message contained in the site. That kind of material depicts a website that contains artistic material such as drawings and painting website hence not appropriate for this site. On the part concerning colors, a little tuning up to make them shouting' would help. The addition of a comment box is in line with my view to enable engagements with visitors. I am in agreement with Michael's view that the logo should be redesigned to make it appear media-like.' Conclusion Most of the basic requirements of a famous website have been met by this website ranging from text size, font to color use. The content is well managed and regularly updated with graphical representation well used. Nevertheless some finer details need to be added to raise its functionality. Navigation through the site is well structured making it easy to access information available. The eye catching properties are lower than modern requirements in terms of vibrancy and intensity. Visitor's interaction platform is a component that should be added to the website to make their participation part of the website. More color patterns should be added to cater for those visitors who are fancy of colors since they react first to color then to content. The font color-background color difference should be worked on since on the topmost right corner, the light blue font on a gray background may not be clearly visible to some visitors. Lastly, the company logo should be modified to incorporate a more media oriented component.' The quality of the images in the site should be improved a note higher so as to improve the appearance of the site. References Abu-Doush, I., Bany-Mohammed, A., Ali, E. and Al-Betar, M.A., 2013.
